This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others, enjoy time in nature, and eat delicious meals! A campfire on Saturday evening (complete with S'mores!) will also be offered.
Throughout the course of the weekend, we will be working together in community to accomplish a number of tasks that will prepare us for the upcoming operating season. Some tasks we will engage in together (i.e., wiping down watercraft and carrying them down to Canoe Cove). For others, we will form teams to 'divide and conquer'!
Team tasks will include, but are not limited to:
Cleaning windows
Tidying up and weeding in the garden
Tightening the bunk bed frames in Craigcroft and Cabins
Wiping down walls and doors
Putting together our new furniture in Upper Jube
Fixing the stairs leading the breezeway of Cabins 5 & 6
Trail maintenance
Power washing decking and other surfaces
Our expectation will be for participants to volunteer for six hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday morning. The rest of the time will be set aside for relaxing and enjoying time in nature and with one another.
All volunteer participants will be housed in our Craigcroft accommodation (we have new, comfy mattresses!). All rooms are double-occupancy, so expect to share a room with another volunteer. If a friend or partner is joining you, we will be sure to assign you to the same room.
Water Taxi Times:
On Friday, the water taxi will depart Horseshoe Bay at 6:30pm (please arrive on the dock near the red-roofed hut by 6:15pm and check in with Neerava). On Sunday, volunteers will depart Fircom on a 2:30pm water taxi.
Meals:
Dinner will be ready for you upon your arrival on Friday, and meals and snacks will be provided through to lunch on Sunday.
What to bring with you:
Sleeping bag and/or blanket (we will provide fitted sheets & pillows with pillow cases)
Warm, comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty (layers are the best, the weather is unpredictable in March!)
Outdoor Gear - rain coat, toque, rain pants, gloves, rain boots
Flashlight or head lamp
Book and/or board or card games
Toiletries
Gardening/Work Gloves (if you have some)
Beverages of choice (tea and coffee will be provided)
A positive, joyful attitude :)
Please Note:
Our Spring Volunteer Weekend is designed as an experience for adults, and our registration portal will only allow for adults (ages 18+) to register (22 spots available). If you have children and finding care for them for the weekend is difficult, please contact Neerava (info@fircom.ca) to inquire about bringing them along. We may be able to arrange child-minding for a very limited amount of children.
Registration Deadline for the Spring Volunteer Weekend is Monday, March 4, 2024, 6pm. There is zero cost for participants, but we need to order food and finalize water taxis in advance.
We hope you will be able to join us for what we believe will be a fun (and productive) weekend!
With much gratitude and appreciation for all who wish to offer their gift of time and energy to Camp Fircom,
Terra McKenzie (Executive Director)
