What is a solo?
A solo is a 24-hour period of time spent silently on your own in nature to rest, recharge and reflect. The experience is supervised and supported by instructors who offer a flexible framework to meet your comfort, interest and skill level.
What support will I receive?
Prior to the 24 hours, you will receive hearty meals, skills training and a tour of Fircom (your home base for the weekend). Instructors will then hike you to your solo spot. They will remain visible, though silent, throughout the 24 hours to respect the time and space you have chosen for yourself.
During solo, we encourage a low-impact fast, so participants will be given only a snack. Those with health concerns will be given additional foods during their solo. The weekend meal plan includes:
- Friday: Dinner and snack
- Saturday: Breakfast and snack
- Sunday: Brunch
Note: There are no meals between Saturday snack and Sunday brunch.
Can I bring anything on my solo?
You will be provided tarp, rope, a whistle, matches, food and water, and your personal items including a sleeping bag, notepad and pen, headlamp and comfortable clothing.
Do I have to travel far from home to participate?
This solo experience takes place at Fircom, a summer camp and outdoor retreat centre on Gambier Island, just 60 minutes via public transit from downtown Vancouver (including the 20-minute water taxi ride)
Fircom is an outdoor retreat centre offering time and space in nature for people wanting to rediscover their purpose and joy. Solo in the Woods is part of the 2015/2016 series, Spirit in the Woods, that includes a silent retreat in spring 2016.
