Ana-Luz has been busy fermenting in the kitchen. We just started a fresh batch of ginger beer and are patiently waiting for wild mint on the island to grow enough for us to make mint ginger beer too.

Ginger beer is the more potent cousin to ginger ale. It has a much, much stronger, spicier flavour than ginger ale. Both drinks end up being around the same calories (from sugar), but the nice thing about making your own ginger beer is that you know exactly what's going into your cup. Ginger ale in North America is generally made with high fructose corn syrup. Yuck. And why have artificial ginger flavour when you can just use the real thing?

Fircom's upcoming Farm to Fork: Summer Retreat is featuring a workshop by Andrea Potter of Rooted Nutrition where she'll be teaching us to make our own fermented foods. Learning how to prepare your own food is key to maintaining good health!
