Dear friends and supporters of Camp Fircom,
After almost six years as our Executive Director, Jeff Willis is leaving that position this week.
Earlier this month, Jeff informed members of the Society’s Board of Directors that he would not be continuing on past 2016 as the society’s Executive Director so he could move forward with other exciting projects.
After lots of thoughtful conversation and reflection, Jeff and the Board agreed that May 31 would be his last day of work. While this may come as a shock, we’re happy that Jeff will have a much deserved summer off with his family. In addition, the Society can immediately begin working on the transition to new leadership. The Board will be meeting with the Society’s staff, supported by BC Conference, to map out what that transition looks like and how to fill any gaps in the interim.
We will be planning a social gathering later in June to bring the community together and thank Jeff.
Despite Jeff moving on right before our summer camping season, he and the entire staff have worked incredibly hard this past winter and spring to ensure we are on good footing. Our camp numbers are way ahead of where they were last year, staff training for camp is already underway, and summer rentals are already in full swing.
The Board is very thankful to have had Jeff as our Executive Director these past years. His creative and entrepreneurial spirit helped us grow in ways we never knew possible. We will all miss his infectious enthusiasm, focused determination, and joyful love for summer camp and outdoor education.
As Jeff often says, “Fircom is a family” and we know Jeff will remain an integral part of our family going forward as a supporter and advocate. We’re excited to see what projects he comes up with next!
Fircom’s ability to meet the needs of such a diverse community is a gift and a blessing to so many of us. We know Jeff is very proud to have been a key part of that. And now, as we move forward, we’re hopeful some of you will step up and help fill out our leadership roster.
After all the hard work Jeff and the entire staff team have put in to our community, camp, and rental program, Fircom is in a great spot. While there are always challenges, key to overcoming them is keeping the momentum moving forward. To do that, we need new volunteers with a commitment to our purpose and diverse community to get involved at the governance level.
As we look towards our next steps, we’re in need of new board members. At six people currently, we are hoping to recruit up to four more folks with a few hours of spare time a month that can help shape the future of Fircom and oversee our present. In particular, we’re looking for folks who have experience in fields like finance, outdoor education, and non-profit management. We are also looking to have folks from different United Church congregations in the Burrard Presbytery sign on as well.
If you would like more information, please email the staff at firstname.lastname@example.org and they will put you in touch with one of us.
Once again, thank you Jeff for your years of hard work and good luck with the adventure ahead!
Josh Keller (Chair) and Rich Overgaard (Vice Chair), on behalf of the CFS Board of Directors.
