Summer Camp

Fircom Summer Camp BC

Why Summer Camp?

For the last 120 years, summer camp has helped millions of North American children, youth and families connect with themselves, each other, and the natural world around them.

In a world that is moving faster and with ever more technology, ensuring that kids have time for reflection and personal growth is tough. Camp gives kids and youth the chance to pause, put down the screen, and sit with themselves. At camp, there is often a theme for the day so campers can reflect on a value like mercy, justice, or leadership and engage in it through discussion, story telling, or journalling.  Summer camp is also about testing yourself through trying new activities under the guidance of caring staff.

As anyone who has gone to camp, lived in dorms, or lived in a shared house knows, living in community creates lots of opportunity for growth.  Ensuring kids are getting lots of practice at making friends, working through conflict, and managing their relationships with others is crucial to developing their social skill set.  This is what camp is all about!

And lastly, endless research proves that when we spend time in the outdoors, we improve our health, our relationships, and our sense of community. Being at summer camp means living in nature, waking up to the birds, jumping in the ocean, hiking endless trails, watching the deer nibble their way across the field, kayaking under the wings of eagles and hawks. Nothing soothes the soul as much as being in nature and feeling the connection to our amazing planet.

Why Fircom?

Since 1923, Camp Fircom has helped kids, youth, and adults experience the joy of summer camp. We do many of the traditional summer camp activities such as archery, canoeing, kayaking, campfires, wide field games, arts and crafts, skit nights, overnight out-trips, campfires and s'mores! These are the classic camp activities many of us grew up cherishing.

Fircom is also a catalyst in the camp world and includes modern camp activities like connecting with local First Nations ancestry, getting your hands dirty with farm-to-table activities, and taking part in cool science experiments to learn about renewable energy systems and sustainability.

Our recently renovated facilities include:

  • Brand new dining hall with large bay windows facing the ocean
  • 15-kW photovoltaic electrical power system
  • Indoor and outdoor programming space, along with a large field, three beaches, and many miles of trails
  • 80% vegetarian meals using fresh produce from the 1.5-acre onsite organic farm just 30 metres from the kitchen.
  • Low environmental-impact recreational activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, archery, challenge courses, snorkeling, farming and hiking.

Fircom is a spiritual summer camp. We create an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere for people identifying as religious, agnostic, atheist, or anything in between. Spiritual programming at our summer camp might be yoga, meditation, or telling a parable from a Christian, or other faith background, around the camp fire.

Fircom is accredited by both the United Church of Canada and the BC Camping Association ensuring that we meet the best practices in the industry for safety, leadership, programming and administration.

Located on Gambier Island in Howe Sound, Camp Fircom is a 120 acre ocean-front property. The island is a short 20 minute water taxi ride from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver.  For some summer camp programs, a pick-up bus service is offered from a few locations around Vancouver.
