Dear Friends of Fircom,
We are very sad to announce that the site had a fire last night/this morning. The Dining Hall has burned down.
Everyone is safe. There were no rental groups, campers or other guests on site. All staff are unhurt.
The fire has been contained. No other buildings on site have been damaged. Nearby trees are being assessed by arborists.
Staff is currently connecting with all rental groups to determine temporary facilitates. If you have an upcoming booking with Fircom, staff will be in touch with you shortly.
Staff has launched an Emergency Fund to collect donations for on-site staff meals and overtime wages. Show your support and contribute via PayPal on our Donations page.
We will be hosting an event in the future to mourn and rebuild. Standby for details.
Fircom has been a sanctuary in nature for the Lower Mainland since 1923. Originally established as a place of respite for Vancouver downtown eastside residents, Fircom underwent a complete renovation and reimagining between 2006 and 2011. This included a new dining hall (recently burned down), new accommodations and the reviving of 80-year old Jubilee Hall. Fircom reopened as a social enterprise in 2010 and has been creating sustainable communities in nature ever since.
Fircom is located on the southwest corner of Gambier Island in Howe Sound, 60 minutes from downtown Vancouver. Fircom offers classic summer camp, unique retreats and group rental space.
