Many hands make light work! To speed through big tasks, Fircom organizes volunteer parties where groups of friends and individuals come up to tackle projects. These happen most often in the off-season (Oct to Apr).
Everyone is welcome to be part of our volunteer community. No specific skills are needed. Jobs range from (but are not limited to) site projects of varying intensity to cleaning, organizing, creative projects, etc. Come to share, come to learn!
Fircom provides warm, comfortable accommodation and covers the cost of water taxi. Volunteers can expect to put in 6 hours per day with lots of time left-over for relaxing meals or games and campfires in the evening. A communal kitchen is made available for everyone to bring food and eat together and people are paired up to share meal responsibilities. Some events are family-friendly with people taking turns doing child care.
From October until April, Camp Fircom is a quiet place with fewer rental groups and more time spent working on site projects. It is also a time for staff to take their vacation. If you have been a part of volunteer weekends, you can apply to become a wrangler. Wranglers get to spend weekends or weeks on the site while staff are away.
Duties involve doing a two or three hour daily walk-through checking on the condition of the property and monitoring and recording meter readouts. The rest of the day is theirs to spend as they wish. If they want to help on site projects you can, but Fircom is also a great place to finish writing a novel, develop a daily yoga practice, and paint to your hearts delight. With only one neighbor on our side of the island, these people must be comfortable being alone in a remote setting. Water taxi is covered by Fircom for wranglers. If they choose to bring a spouse, child or friend they must cover their own water taxi. A comfortable, warm accommodation will be provided.
